We talked through difficult questions and brought up some tough topics, but Dean made the space non-judgmental, welcoming, and very relaxed. He asked difficult and thought provoking questions, and when we didn’t have any answers, he always could pull from his own experiences. What we thought would be “another hoop to jump through” turned into something that we looked forward to each session. During our premarital sessions, we felt as though we had his undivided attention and that we could talk with him about anything without fear of judgment. Pastor Dean took the time to get to know us as individuals so that he could guide as we came together in marriage. He helped us to frame what our marriage, with Christ at the center, could look like. This perspective was paramount for us and to which we continue to build from each day. Thomas came from a divorce situation with three teenagers. I was widowed with a ten year old. Our backstories had unique challenges. It’s a very personal and vulnerable situation and we both were a little weary of being judged. After our first meeting with Dean, all of these fears disappeared. Dean was easy to talk to and immediately put us at ease. Throughout our meetings with him, he helped us examine both ourselves as individuals and also helped us recognize our strengths and confront our weaknesses as a couple. He went above and beyond to make us comfortable and was honest and open about his own experiences as a husband and a father, both the good and bad, and what they taught him about marriage and life. He used both his expertise as a minister as well as his practical knowledge as a husband to teach and mentor us.
